Salted foods Increase Stomach Cancer Risk

Kompas.com - a high salt diet increases the risk of stomach cancer up to 10 percent. Concluded the study conducted by experts from South Korea who did the study on more than 2 million people.

Stomach cancer or gastric cancer included in this type of cancer that affects many people in the world. Some studies have found links between salty foods and the incidence of gastric cancer. Although the mechanism of the cancer incidence is not clear, experts still recommend limiting the intake of salty foods to prevent cancer.

On his research, Jeongseon Kim and his team from the National Cancer Center Research Institute examined the impact of salt on the incidence of gastric cancer in more than 2 million South Koreans aged 30-80 years. All respondents provided information about diet and lifestyle. They also underwent checkups between 1996 and 1997.

According to the Korea Central Cancer Registry data, for more than 7 years, 9620 men and 2773 women suffering from stomach cancer. According to Kim and his team, people who prefer salty foods had 10 percent higher risk of cancer stomach.

Responding to the results of the study, Dr Al B Benson, gastric cancer specialist from Chicago, U.S., who was not involved in the research, said the results of these studies showed no link between salted food and gastric cancer.

He said, how the salt consumed is more important. A study in Japan showed that sodium in table salt is more associated with cardiovascular disease, not cancer. Meanwhile, salty foods, such as processed fish, it is associated with cancer.

"What must be known is how the use of salt in foods, such as pickles or pickle made, the more risky cause health problems," said Benson.

Nevertheless, he said, salt restriction is more beneficial to prevent the rise in blood pressure.
